In the Netherlands the species has been found twice, in 1810 and in 1984. Grimmia crinita is a European endemic species and one of the few Grimmia species that only grows on basic, weathered substrates. The species has predominantly been collected from staple walls around vineyards in France and central Europe. A natural habitat is formed by boulders of basic sandstone boulders around the River Ebro in central Spain.
